Multisystemic Therapy Problem Sexual Behavior
Program Overview
Multisystemic Therapy: Problem Sexual Behavior (MST-PSB) is a specialized version of the MST model developed specifically for youth who have engaged in sexually abusive or inappropriate behaviors. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of reoffending, strengthen family oversight and accountability, and support lasting, positive change for youth in their homes and communities. MST-PSB is currently the only evidence-based treatment model designed specifically for this population.
Like all MST programs, MST-PSB is built around the family and delivered in the settings where youth actually live, including the home, school, and community. Youth and families participate in structured, high-frequency sessions, addressing the full range of factors that can contribute to problematic sexual behavior, including the young person’s individual needs, family dynamics, peer relationships, school performance, and community context.
Services are delivered by clinicians who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide support and respond to crises as needed. Treatment typically runs five to seven months, and each clinician carries a small caseload of three to five families to ensure every family receives focused, intensive attention.
Safety is the primary focus throughout treatment. An individualized safety plan is developed for each youth, with attention to risk factors such as grooming behaviors (when present), family supervision, environmental considerations, and any history of sexually abusive behavior. Protecting current and potential victims is a central priority, and caregivers play an active, committed role in upholding safety measures throughout treatment.

Program Impact
“Overall, we had better communication after MST-PSB. We got to a place where everyone felt comfortable speaking up. There was a lot of personal growth – not just for my son, but for my husband and me. We grew in parenting and in how we approached things with our family.”
– Parent of Child in MST-PSB
